An Emotional Condition

Tinnitus is that buzzing, ringing, crackling, sound perceived in one or both ears. It can be daunting to say the least, and drive those who suffer from it onto an emotional roller coaster. The severity can range from minor aggravation to incapacitating pain.

There may be a number of causes for tinnitus such as diabetes, allergy, high or low blood pressure, thyroid problems, or numerous medications such as anti-inflammatory medications and antidepressants. Noisy environments, sugar, alcohol, tobacco, high salt intake, artificial sweeteners, and caffeine can all be culprits as well.

However, the emotional impact of tinnitus can be destructive and even worse than the actual symptoms. After being told that they will "have to learn to live with it," depending on how well a person handles their emotions; this could take them into a tailspin that they may never recover from.

Unnerving stress, short temper, irritability, and paranoia are just some of the emotional issues that can pop-up in an individual suffering with tinnitus. Concentration, memory, and paying attention to others can become challenging. This can intensify the tinnitus already taking over the individuals physical, and now, emotional life. In fact, it's almost unfeasible to function coherently in a job or in social settings.

Eventually, outside of various medications and therapies, the sufferer must totally accept the condition, and thereby become calmer. Attention must be taken away from the ringing sound by inner calmness, which in turn causes the tinnitus victim to forget about their situation. After this happens, recovery can begin. In addition, the tinnitus sufferer's condition does not only affect them but their loved ones as well. So in effect, tinnitus sufferers may have to take more responsibility for their relief than they prefer, but in the end, hearing the pure tone of glistening sounds again is well worth the effort.
